EGO is a specialized software product within the Overture stack, designed as an OAuth2-based authentication and authorization management microservice. It was developed to facilitate single sign-on (SSO) for microservices, allowing users to authenticate using federated identities such as Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn. By providing stateless authorization through JSON Web Tokens (JWT), EGO simplifies the security architecture for complex data platforms.
The project originated at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) as part of a broader effort to manage genomic and clinical data. As an open-source tool, it is maintained under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, ensuring that the technology remains accessible to the global scientific and development communities. While its development is rooted in Toronto, Canada, its open-source nature allows for global contributions and deployments.
EGO is an integral component of the Overture ecosystem, which provides a suite of tools for large-scale data management. The brand and its underlying codebase are governed by the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, which continues to provide the infrastructure and administrative oversight for its ongoing development and integration into international research collaboratives.
