Founded in 1969 by Doug Warbrick and Brian Singer in Jan Juc, Victoria, Australia, Rip Curl began as a surfboard manufacturer before expanding into wetsuits and a full range of surf-related apparel. The brand famously established 'The Search' as its core philosophy, representing the quest for unridden waves and the lifestyle surrounding it. In 2019, the brand was acquired by Kathmandu Holdings (now KMD Brands) in a significant deal that aimed to consolidate major outdoor and action sports brands under one corporate umbrella.

While Rip Curl's heritage is deeply rooted in the Australian surfing scene, its manufacturing footprint is global. Wetsuit production has historically centered around its own specialized factories in Asia, particularly Thailand, while apparel and accessories are produced across various countries including China, Vietnam, and Indonesia to meet international demand.
