Five Ten was established in 1985 by Charles Cole in Redlands, California. The brand is best known for its revolutionary 'Stealth Rubber,' a high-friction compound that transformed the worlds of rock climbing and mountain biking. The company's name is a direct reference to the 5.10 difficulty rating in the Yosemite Decimal System, symbolizing the threshold where climbing shifts from moderate to expert level.

In November 2011, the global sporting giant Adidas acquired Five Ten for approximately $25 million to strengthen its outdoor division. Following the acquisition, the brand was gradually integrated into the Adidas Terrex line and its headquarters were relocated to Herzogenaurach, Germany. While the brand originated as a family-run American manufacturer with production in California, today its manufacturing is distributed globally, with products made in various countries typical for Adidas footwear production, while research and development remain a core part of the Adidas technical outdoor strategy.
