Cuisinart is an iconic American brand that revolutionized home cooking by introducing the first food processor to the U.S. market in 1973. Founded in 1971 by Carl Sontheimer, an MIT-trained physicist and cooking enthusiast, the brand's name is a portmanteau of 'cuisine' and 'art'. Originally inspired by professional French restaurant equipment, Sontheimer redesigned the French Robot-Coupe machines for domestic use, securing its place as a staple in high-end American kitchens.

After facing financial difficulties in the late 1980s, Cuisinart was acquired by the Conair Corporation in 1989. For decades, Conair operated as a private entity under the leadership of the Rizzuto family. However, in 2021, the brand's ownership shifted when American Securities LLC, a leading U.S. private equity firm, acquired Conair Corporation. As of 2026, Cuisinart remains a primary subsidiary within the American Securities portfolio, alongside other well-known brands like BaByliss and Waring.

While Cuisinart's identity is deeply rooted in American culinary culture and its headquarters remains in Stamford, Connecticut, the manufacturing landscape is global. The vast majority of Cuisinart’s electrical appliances, such as blenders, coffee makers, and food processors, are manufactured in China. A notable exception is the 'French Classic' cookware line, which continues to be produced in France to maintain its premium heritage and quality standards.
