Kotlin Programming Language

Kotlin is a modern, statically typed, cross-platform programming language designed for full interoperability with Java and the JVM. Originally unveiled by the software company JetBrains in July 2011, it was named after Kotlin Island, located near St. Petersburg, Russia. The project was open-sourced in 2012 under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing for global community contributions and development.

While JetBrains continues to lead the language's development from its headquarters in Prague, the Kotlin brand and trademark are protected by the Kotlin Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 2017 and co-sponsored by JetBrains and Google. Since 2019, Google has officially recommended Kotlin as the preferred language for Android app development, significantly boosting its global adoption across server-side, web, and mobile platforms.
