WooCommerce is a globally recognized open-source e-commerce platform designed primarily for WordPress. It originated in 2011 when developers Mike Jolley and James Koster joined WooThemes to create a fork of an earlier plugin called Jigoshop. Since then, it has grown into one of the most popular tools for digital commerce, powering millions of online stores worldwide.
In 2015, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when WooThemes and WooCommerce were acquired by Automattic, the company founded by WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg. This acquisition integrated WooCommerce more deeply into the WordPress ecosystem, ensuring its long-term stability and development. Today, the platform is maintained by a diverse, globally distributed team of engineers, though its corporate headquarters remain in the United States.
As of 2024 and beyond, WooCommerce remains under the stewardship of Automattic. It continues to evolve through a combination of proprietary development and contributions from a massive community of third-party developers, making it a cornerstone of the modern open-web economy.
