While the brand was founded and built as a family business in the UK, its ownership shifted globally in 2015. Today, the brand is owned by the Italian confectionery giant Ferrero Group. Despite this international ownership, Thorntons maintains a strong local presence in Britain, with its primary manufacturing facility located in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Following the closure of its physical retail stores in 2021, the brand has transitioned into a consumer goods model, focusing on supermarket sales and online distribution while remaining a key player in the UK's luxury chocolate market.
