Balisto was first introduced in 1981 by Mars, Incorporated in West Germany. The name is derived from the German word 'Ballaststoffe', which refers to dietary fiber, highlighting the product's focus on whole-grain ingredients. Since its inception, the brand has been positioned as a wholesome snack alternative to traditional chocolate bars by combining crunchy cereals with creamy fillings and milk chocolate.

The majority of Balisto production takes place at the Mars Wrigley chocolate factory in Viersen, Germany. This facility is one of the largest production sites for chocolate biscuit bars in Europe, utilizing highly automated lines to process millions of bars daily. From this central hub, Balisto is distributed primarily across European markets, such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Today, Balisto is owned and managed by Mars Wrigley, a division of the American multinational corporation Mars, Incorporated. As a global leader in confectionery, pet care, and food services, Mars continues to manage Balisto as a key regional brand in Europe, focusing on sustainability initiatives such as transitioning to paper-based packaging for specific product variants.
