Fairtrade is a global certification system and social movement designed to empower small-scale farmers and workers in developing countries. Unlike a commercial brand, Fairtrade acts as a bridge between socially conscious consumers and producers who often face marginalization in the global market. The model ensures that producers receive a 'Fairtrade Minimum Price' to cover the costs of sustainable production and a 'Fairtrade Premium'—an additional sum of money used for community development projects like schools, clinics, and clean water access.

The system is governed by Fairtrade International, which sets the rigorous social, economic, and environmental standards that traders and producers must follow. Compliance is verified by independent certification bodies, most notably FLOCERT. Products bearing the mark, ranging from bananas and coffee to cotton and gold, are grown according to standards that prohibit forced labor, child labor, and harmful pesticides while encouraging environmental sustainability and fair workplace practices.
