Freixenet Cordon Negro Sparkling Wine

Freixenet is one of the world's most recognized names in sparkling wine, particularly famous for its Cava produced in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain. The brand's history dates back to 1861 with the founding of the Casa Sala winery, though the Freixenet brand itself was officially launched in 1914 following the marriage of Pedro Ferrer and Dolores Sala Vivé. Their signature product, Cordón Negro, introduced in the 1970s in its iconic matte black bottle, helped propel the brand into global markets.

In 2018, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when the German sparkling wine giant Henkell & Co. (a subsidiary of the Oetker Group) acquired a majority stake in the company. This created Henkell Freixenet, the world's leading sparkling wine group. While the heart of the production remains at the historic cellars in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Spain, the brand has expanded its portfolio to include Italian Prosecco and still wines from various regions, consolidating its position under German corporate leadership while maintaining its Spanish heritage.
