Lotus Biscoff Speculoos

Speculoos is a traditional spiced shortcrust biscuit that originated in the Low Countries, specifically Belgium and the Netherlands. The most globally recognized brand of Speculoos is Lotus Biscoff, which was founded by the Boone family in 1932 in Lembeke, Belgium. Originally served as a seasonal treat for St. Nicholas Day, the caramelised biscuit gained year-round popularity and eventually became a staple accompaniment to coffee in cafes across Europe.

While traditional speculoos is made by many local bakeries in Belgium and France, Lotus Bakeries has scaled production to a global level. The company maintains its primary manufacturing facility in Lembeke, Belgium, and opened its first production plant outside Belgium in South Carolina, USA, to meet North American demand. Lotus Bakeries remains a publicly traded company on the Euronext Brussels, still largely controlled by the founding Boone family. The brand has expanded significantly through product innovations like Biscoff spread and ice cream, while maintaining the original recipe's signature blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
