Roundup is more than just a weedkiller; it is one of the most recognized agricultural brands globally. Originally developed by the American agrochemical company Monsanto in the 1970s, its active ingredient, glyphosate, revolutionized large-scale farming and residential gardening by providing a powerful solution for broad-spectrum weed control.
Today, the brand's ownership has shifted following a major corporate merger. In 2018, the German pharmaceutical and life sciences giant Bayer AG acquired Monsanto, bringing Roundup under its expansive Crop Science division. While the brand is synonymous with its American origins, its production is now global in scale, with manufacturing facilities located in various countries to serve international markets, including significant operations in the United States and Europe.
Despite its transition to German ownership, Roundup remains a cornerstone of the global herbicide market. Bayer continues to manage the brand's distribution and regulatory compliance worldwide, navigating a complex landscape of agricultural technology and environmental policy.
