Marabou is one of Sweden's most beloved chocolate brands, carrying a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1916. The brand was established by Henning Throne-Holst, who also founded the Norwegian chocolate brand Freia. Due to the brand names already being registered, Henning named his Swedish venture 'Marabou' after the marabou stork, which was featured on the Freia logo. Over the decades, Marabou has become an iconic cultural staple in Scandinavia, known for its smooth texture and signature recipes.

Today, the brand's main manufacturing facility remains in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, where it has produced sweets since the early 20th century. While the heart-shaped praline boxes are a seasonal and gift-giving favorite specifically identified with Swedish tradition, the brand's reach is global through its corporate parentage.

Currently, Marabou is owned by Mondelēz International, a global snack food powerhouse based in the United States. Mondelēz acquired the brand as part of its acquisition of the Kraft Foods confectionery portfolio. Despite being under American ownership, the brand maintains its distinct Swedish identity and continues to be a market leader in Northern Europe.
