McGrath first established a commercial tea plantation in the 1950s after discovering wild tea plants growing in the region. The tea is primarily cultivated and processed at Nerada's own plantation in Malanda, Queensland. Unlike many other global tea brands that blend various international leaves, Nerada's flagship products are celebrated for being 100% Australian grown and pesticide-free. This commitment to local production has earned them various accolades, including being a multi-year winner of the Canstar Blue award for the Most Satisfied Customers in the tea category.

Today, Nerada Tea is owned by Nerada Tea Pty Ltd, which is a subsidiary of the global tea holding company Jennifer Tea Holdings based in the United Kingdom. Despite this international corporate ownership, the brand remains firmly rooted in its Australian heritage, maintaining its main production facilities and plantations in Queensland to supply the Australian market.
