BeReal was founded in 2020 by Alexis Barreyat and Kevin Perreau in France. The platform gained exponential popularity globally in 2022 for its 'anti-Instagram' approach, encouraging users to share unfiltered, spontaneous snapshots of their daily lives once a day at a random time. This innovative concept challenged the curated and edited nature of traditional social media.
As a digital software product, BeReal is not 'manufactured' in a traditional sense. The application's core development and engineering initially took place in Paris, France. Following its acquisition, engineering teams and server management expanded to include significant operations in the United States and other various cloud service locations to support its global user base.
In June 2024, the French technology giant Voodoo acquired BeReal for approximately €500 million ($537 million). The acquisition aimed to leverage Voodoo's expertise in mobile app growth and monetization to scale the platform. Under the leadership of Voodoo, BeReal continues to maintain its headquarters in Paris while integrating into a larger portfolio of digital entertainment brands.
