It was originally created by Ugo Borghetti in Ancona, Italy, to celebrate the inauguration of the Pescara-Ancona railway line. The drink quickly gained popularity among train travelers and eventually became a staple in Italian bars and households, particularly known for its association with football matches where it was often served in small 'stud' bottles.

The product is crafted using a blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans, which are freshly roasted and brewed into espresso before being transformed into a liqueur. For several decades, the brand has been under the stewardship of Fratelli Branca Distillerie, a prestigious Italian spirits company based in Milan.
