Oboz Footwear was founded in 2007 in Bozeman, Montana, a location that gave the brand its name—a portmanteau of "Outside" and "Bozeman." The brand quickly established itself in the outdoor industry by specializing in technically advanced hiking boots and shoes known for their signature O FIT Insoles and rugged outsoles designed for the challenging terrain of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

While the brand's design and engineering headquarters remain in Montana, the manufacturing process takes place in factories across Asia, primarily in Vietnam and Cambodia, to leverage specialized technical footwear production facilities. The brand is also recognized for its environmental commitment, notably through its partnership with Trees for the Future, where a tree is planted for every pair of footwear sold.

In 2018, Oboz was acquired by the Kathmandu Group, a leading outdoor gear retailer based in New Zealand. Following a corporate rebranding in 2021, the parent company is now known as KMD Brands Limited. Despite the change in ownership, Oboz continues to operate as an independent subsidiary, maintaining its focus on the Bozeman-inspired outdoor philosophy and distribution through specialized retailers worldwide.
