While originally a hardware and software project based in Hamburg, Germany, the company's trajectory changed through various strategic acquisitions. After a brief period under the ownership of Pinnacle Systems in the early 2000s, Steinberg was acquired by the Japanese Yamaha Corporation in 2005. Today, Steinberg operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yamaha, maintaining its headquarters and primary development teams in Hamburg.
