Metrorex Public Transport Service

Metrorex is the specialized rapid transit system serving Bucharest, the capital of Romania. The brand was established in the late 1970s when the Romanian government began developing a subway infrastructure to modernize the capital's public transport system. Unlike many international transportation services that may be privatized, Metrorex has remained a state-integrated entity since its inaugural run in 1979.

The service's 'manufacturing' in terms of operational delivery is purely localized to the Bucharest metropolitan area. The system is managed under the authority of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. While the rolling stock (trains) used by Metrorex has been manufactured by various international companies including Astra Vagoane Călători, Bombardier Transportation, and Alstom, the service brand itself and its operations are strictly domestic.

Ownership of Metrorex is held entirely by the Romanian State. As a state-owned enterprise (Societatea Comercială de Transport cu Metroul București), it functions as a strategic public utility. The governance and strategic direction of the brand are dictated by national infrastructure policies, ensuring that the metro remains the primary artery for commuters within Bucharest.
