Orient has established itself as a cornerstone of Japanese horology, known worldwide for its dedication to mechanical craftsmanship. The brand was founded in Tokyo, Japan, in 1950, emerging from the legacy of the Yoshida Watch Shop founded by Shogoro Yoshida. Unlike many modern watchmakers that outsource components, Orient is celebrated for producing its mechanical movements in-house, a rarity in the industry at its price point.
While the main manufacturing and assembly of premium lines like the Orient Star take place in Japan, some components and entry-level models are produced in other facilities across Asia to meet global demand. Despite its independence in design and production, Orient has been part of a larger corporate structure for decades. In 2017, the Orient Watch Company was fully integrated into the Seiko Epson Corporation, making Orient a core brand within the Epson group alongside its imaging and printing technologies.
Today, Orient and Orient Star represent the mechanical soul of the Epson portfolio, focusing on traditional watchmaking values. The brand maintains a distinct identity from the Seiko Watch Corporation (a separate subsidiary of the broader Seiko Group), continuing to focus on robust, affordable, and aesthetically diverse mechanical timepieces for connoisseurs and casual collectors alike.
