Audacity is a renowned open-source digital audio editor and recording application. It was originally created in 1999 by Dominic Mazzoni and Roger Dannenberg at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States. Following its public release in 2000, it became one of the most popular free software tools for audio manipulation globally, maintained by a vast community of volunteer developers around the world.
In April 2021, the brand and its trademarks were acquired by Muse Group. Since then, while the core software remains open-source, its development is spearheaded by Muse Group's specialized teams. Because it is a digital product developed through distributed engineering efforts and community contributions, its 'manufacturing' is not tied to a single physical location but occurs across multiple countries.
The ultimate ownership of Audacity now resides with Muse Group, a multinational corporation that manages several major music technology brands. The company is headquartered in Limassol, Cyprus, and also manages other popular platforms like Ultimate Guitar and MuseScore.
