Makia was born in 2001 in the historic Punavuori harbor district of Helsinki, Finland. Founded by Joni Malmi, Jarno Voutilainen, and Jesse Hyväri, the brand was built on the principles of Nordic functionality and durability, aiming to produce clothing that withstands the harsh northern climate while maintaining a timeless aesthetic. The brand famously markets itself with the slogan 'Through the Cold,' emphasizing its roots in Finnish street culture.
While the design and brand management remain in Helsinki, manufacturing is distributed globally to specialized hubs. High-quality jerseys and knits are often produced in Turkey and Portugal, while more technical outerwear and accessories are manufactured in China. In recent years, Makia has significantly increased its focus on sustainability, partnering with domestic Finnish companies like Pure Waste to incorporate recycled materials into their collections.
In terms of ownership, Makia was acquired by the Finnish retail and branding powerhouse Manna & Co in 2021. This move consolidated Makia under the same umbrella as other iconic Finnish brands like Finlayson and Vallila. Manna & Co continues to manage the brand's international expansion while preserving the distinct, rugged identity that originated on the docks of Helsinki.
