Godot is a free and open-source game engine developed by a global community of contributors. Originally created by Juan Linietsky and Ariel Manzur in Argentina, it was initially used for several in-house projects within the Argentinian studio OKAM Studio. In 2014, the source code was released to the public under the MIT license, transitioning from a proprietary tool to a community-driven project.
As a digital product, Godot is developed through worldwide collaboration via the internet. It is not 'manufactured' in a traditional sense but is assembled and coded by volunteers and full-time developers located across the globe. The engine's development is currently overseen by the Godot Foundation, which ensures its continued growth and independence. The software's architecture is unique for its scene-based tree structure and its dedicated scripting language, GDScript, although it also supports C# and C++.
