Brand Origin and History

Motul is a high-performance French company specialized in the formulation and production of high-tech engine lubricants. Founded in 1853 in New York as Swan & Finch, it eventually became a standalone French entity when its distributor, Ernst Zaugg, bought the brand and the manufacturing technology in the mid-20th century. Motul is famously recognized for launching the first semi-synthetic oil in 1966 and the first 100% synthetic oil for passenger cars in 1971.

Manufacturing and Global Presence

While Motul's main production and research facilities have historically been centered in Aubervilliers, France, the brand has expanded its manufacturing footprint significantly. To meet global demand, the company utilizes specialized facilities in Italy, Spain, Vietnam, and India. This distributed manufacturing model ensures that their high-quality lubricants and cleaning products meet regional specifications while maintaining French engineering standards.

Ownership and Structure

Unlike many global oil brands that have been absorbed by major conglomerates (Big Oil), Motul remains a private, independent French company. It is currently owned by the descendants of the Zaugg family. The brand operates through various international subsidiaries, such as Motul Asia Pacific and Motul USA, allowing it to maintain a dominant position in the motorsports and enthusiast automotive markets worldwide.
