The Olympus PEN series is a storied line of cameras that originally debuted as half-frame film cameras in 1959, designed by Yoshihisa Maitani. The modern digital incarnation, the PEN-F, was introduced in 2016 as a premium rangefinder-style mirrorless camera, paying homage to the original aesthetic while using the Micro Four Thirds system.

Historically, the brand was a cornerstone of the Olympus Corporation, a Japanese giant known for both consumer optics and medical imaging. However, due to shifting market dynamics, Olympus divested its imaging division in early 2021. The business is now owned and operated by OM Digital Solutions, which continues to release products under the 'Olympus' (for legacy models) and 'OM SYSTEM' brand names. While the brand remains Japanese, manufacturing for the PEN series has largely transitioned from Japan to Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam.
