Valheim is a critically acclaimed sandbox survival game that draws heavy inspiration from Viking culture and Norse mythology. Developed by the independent Swedish studio Iron Gate Studio, the game was released in early access in February 2021 and quickly became a global phenomenon. Origin and Development

The project began as a solo endeavor by Richard Svensson in 2018. Seeking to expand the scope of the game, Svensson co-founded Iron Gate Studio in Skövde, Sweden. The game's distinct low-fi aesthetic combined with high-end lighting and atmospheric effects allowed a small team to create an expansive experience that resonated with millions of players worldwide.

Ownership and Publishing

Valheim is published by Coffee Stain Publishing, which is part of the Coffee Stain Holding group. Since 2020, Coffee Stain has been a subsidiary of the Embracer Group, a massive Swedish media conglomerate. This ownership structure places Valheim within one of the largest video game portfolios in the world, while the creative control remains primarily with the original developers at Iron Gate Studio in Sweden.
