RumbleDB is an open-source big data query engine designed to run JSONiq queries on top of distributed computing frameworks like Apache Spark. It was originally developed as a research project at ETH Zurich, particularly within the Systems Group under the leadership of Professor Ghislain Fourny. The software is specifically engineered to process massive, heterogeneous datasets—including JSON, Parquet, and XML—that reside on large-scale storage systems like HDFS or Amazon S3.

As an open-source project, RumbleDB is maintained by its community of developers and academic researchers. It bridges the gap between structured SQL-like querying and the flexible, semi-structured nature of JSON data. While it originated in an academic setting in Switzerland, it has gained traction in the global data science and engineering community due to its ability to parallelize complex data processing tasks across large clusters without requiring users to write low-level Spark code.
