Historically, the brand is deeply rooted in Northern France, where the Mulliez family opened the first Auchan store in 1961. Today, while the raw cocoa is sourced internationally (primarily from West Africa), the processing and packaging are often handled by regional specialists within the European Union, mainly in France, to serve its extensive network of hypermarkets. The brand remains under the private ownership of the Association Familiale Mulliez, making it one of the few global retail leaders that is not publicly traded on a stock exchange.
