JBL is one of the most iconic names in American audio history, founded by James Bullough Lansing in 1946. Originally established as James B. Lansing Sound, the brand became a pioneer in loudspeakers and sound reinforcement, notably providing the audio technology for legendary events like Woodstock and the first sound-sync movies. The brand was later acquired by Jervis Corporation (which became Harman International) in 1969, solidifying its place as a leader in both consumer and professional audio sectors.
Today, JBL remains a flagship brand under the Harman International Industries umbrella. In 2017, the ownership shifted significantly when Samsung Electronics acquired Harman, bringing JBL into the ecosystem of one of the world's largest technology conglomerates. While the brand maintains its engineering and design roots in Northridge, California, its high-volume manufacturing is strategically distributed across global facilities in China, Mexico, and Europe to serve international markets.
