Superdry T-shirt

Superdry is a prominent British lifestyle brand that rose to global fame in the early 2010s. Despite the widespread use of Japanese characters and motifs in its designs, the brand was actually founded in Cheltenham, England, in 2003 by Julian Dunkerton and James Holder. The Japanese aesthetic was inspired by a research trip the founders took to Tokyo, where they became fascinated by the bold typography and vintage graphics of Japanese street culture. The name itself was reportedly inspired by a translation seen on a Japanese beer bottle.

While the brand identity blends British craftsmanship with Japanese graphics and American vintage styles, the products are manufactured through a global supply chain. Superdry does not own its own factories but works with third-party suppliers primarily located in China, India, Turkey, and several other Asian countries like Vietnam and Cambodia. Historically a public company listed on the London Stock Exchange, Superdry faced financial challenges in the early 2020s and was delisted in 2024 to undergo restructuring as a private entity, now often referred to as Superdry & Co, under the leadership of its original co-founder, Julian Dunkerton.
