Originally founded through a partnership between the British chemical giant ICI and the American company DuPont, it pioneered the development of high-quality synthetic finishes for home and industrial use. Over the decades, the brand became famous for its wide color palette and its association with the 'Dulux Dog,' which helped make it a household name in the decorative coatings industry.

Modern ownership of the Dulux brand is unique and geographically split due to historical divestments. In most of the world, including Europe, the Americas, and parts of Asia, the brand is owned by AkzoNobel, a global leader in paints and coatings based in the Netherlands. However, in the Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea markets, the brand is owned and operated by DuluxGroup, which was formerly part of Orica and is now a subsidiary of the Japanese giant Nippon Paint Holdings. Manufacturing is largely localized, with major production facilities in the United Kingdom, Australia, and various regional hubs to serve local markets.
