Podcasts are a decentralized form of digital media that originated in the early 2000s, pioneered by figures like Dave Winer and Adam Curry who integrated RSS feeds with audio files. The term itself is a portmanteau of 'iPod' and 'broadcast.' Today, the podcasting landscape is a vast ecosystem featuring content creators from almost every country on Earth. Production is entirely global, as anyone with internet access and a microphone can produce and distribute content.

While the technology is open-source (RSS), the distribution market is heavily dominated by large scale platforms. Major players like Spotify (Sweden), Apple (USA), and Amazon (USA) have invested billions into acquiring hosting platforms and exclusive rights. Despite this corporate involvement, the underlying RSS infrastructure remains open, allowing for a mix of independent creators and multi-billion dollar media conglomerates to coexist in the same digital space.
