The brand's history dates back to 1901 when it was registered in Switzerland by Philippe Suchard. The name 'Milka' is a portmanteau of the German words for its primary ingredients: Milch (Milk) and Kakao (Cocoa).

While the brand has Swiss roots, its main production facility has long been located in Lörrach, Germany. Today, Milka products are manufactured across several European locations to satisfy global demand. Ownership has transitioned through several major corporate mergers: from Suchard to Interfood, then to Jacobs Suchard, and eventually being acquired by Kraft Foods. Since 2012, Milka has been under the ownership of Mondelez International, a global snack food powerhouse headquartered in the United States.
