Maaslander cheese

Maaslander is a prominent Dutch cheese brand known for its remarkably creamy texture and reduced salt content. Launched in 1975, the brand revolutionized the traditional Gouda market by introducing a shorter brining process, resulting in a milder flavor and approximately 25% less salt compared to standard Dutch cheeses. The name, derived from the Meuse (Maas) River region, has become synonymous with accessible, high-quality daily cheese.

The production of Maaslander is rooted in the Netherlands, specifically using Dutch cow's milk from pasture-grazed cattle. The manufacturing facilities are primarily located in Huizen. In recent years, the brand has transitioned to using microbial (vegetarian) rennet to ensure its products are suitable for vegetarians, further modernizing its traditional dairy heritage.

Throughout its history, Maaslander has remained a family-owned asset. It is the flagship brand of the Westland Kaas Groep, a company that has been active in the Dutch dairy trade since 1936. Unlike many other major food brands that have been acquired by global conglomerates, Maaslander continues to be managed by the Westland family, preserving its status as an independent Dutch cheese specialist.
