The brand's identity is closely tied to the Gurk Cathedral (Gurker Dom), and its recipe incorporates fresh herbs harvested from the Alpine pastures of the valley.

Originally developed by the Gurktaler Alpenkräuter GmbH, the brand has remained a staple of Austrian spirits. Over the years, ownership moved to the German spirits group Schlumberger, which was later acquired by the Dutch group Marussia Beverages.
