ASML is the world's leading manufacturer of photolithography machines, which are essential for producing the microchips that power everything from smartphones to artificial intelligence. Founded in 1984 as a joint venture between the Dutch electronics giant Philips and the chip-machine manufacturer Advanced Semiconductor Materials International (ASMI), the company is headquartered in Veldhoven, Netherlands.
ASML’s manufacturing process is highly specialized and relies on a global supply chain. While the final assembly and testing of its most advanced systems—such as Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) and Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) machines—take place primarily in Veldhoven, Netherlands, significant components and system modules are manufactured in other regions. This includes high-precision optical components and systems from the United States (following the acquisition of SVG and Cymer) and localized manufacturing and refurbishing centers in Taiwan and South Korea to support its major clients like TSMC and Samsung.
Initially a subsidiary, ASML became a fully independent, publicly traded company in 1995. Today, it is an international corporation with a highly diversified shareholder base. It is listed on both the Euronext Amsterdam and NASDAQ. As of 2024, the company's ultimate owner is its collective of institutional and private shareholders, with major investment firms such as BlackRock, Inc. and Capital Group typically holding significant stakes. ASML remains a Dutch-headquartered entity, operating as the critical linchpin in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
