The name 'Ratzeputz' translates roughly to 'scrubbing everything out,' referring to its potency and reputation as a digestive aid.

Historically, the beverage was produced by the C.W. Baland & Langebartels distillery in Celle for over a century. In modern times, manufacturing and distribution rights have shifted to Schwarzenberg, though the product retains its traditional recipe and cultural identity as a specialty of the Lüneburg Heath region in Lower Saxony. Currently, the brand is owned by the Schwarze und Schlichte group, a major player in the German spirits market that manages a portfolio of traditional regional liquor brands.
