Listerine is one of the most recognized oral hygiene brands globally, with a history dating back to the late 19th century in the United States. Originally formulated as a surgical antiseptic and floor cleaner, it was later marketed as a powerful solution for halitosis and plaque reduction. The 'Cool Mint Milder Geschmack' (milder taste) variant visible here is specifically designed for the European market, offering the standard antiseptic benefits without the intense alcohol-based sting associated with the original formula.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major pharmaceutical giants. It was originally developed by Dr. Joseph Lawrence and Jordan Wheat Lambert of the Lambert Pharmacal Company. Lambert Pharmacal later merged to form Warner-Lambert, which was subsequently acquired by Pfizer. In 2006, the consumer healthcare division was sold to Johnson & Johnson. As of the current period, the brand is owned by Kenvue, the standalone consumer health company spun off from Johnson & Johnson in 2023. Manufacturing for the European market primarily takes place in dedicated facilities in Italy and France to ensure distribution efficiency across the continent.
