The brand was founded in the United States in 1946 by James Bullough Lansing, a pioneering audio engineer who previously co-founded Altec Lansing. JBL's legacy is built on providing sound for major historical events, including the original Woodstock festival and countless cinema houses worldwide.

While the brand originated in Los Angeles, California, its manufacturing footprint has expanded globally to meet high demand. Most consumer-grade products like portable Bluetooth speakers and headphones are manufactured in China. However, high-end professional equipment and specialized cinema speakers are often produced in facilities across Mexico, Hungary, and Germany. Today, JBL is part of the Harman International Industries cluster, which has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics since 2017. This ownership has allowed JBL to integrate advanced connectivity and software features into its legendary acoustic hardware.
