TechCrunch was founded in June 2005 by Michael Arrington and Keith Teare. Originally launched as a blog tracking the burgeoning Web 2.0 ecosystem and the Silicon Valley startup scene, it quickly became the definitive source for technology news, venture capital funding announcements, and startup profiles. The brand is also well-known for its 'Disrupt' conferences held globally.
As a digital publication, TechCrunch's 'manufacturing' consists of editorial content creation and software development. The majority of its operations, editorial staff, and technical infrastructure are based in the United States, specifically in San Francisco and New York, though it engages with reporters and audience members worldwide.
In 2010, TechCrunch was acquired by AOL. Subsequently, AOL was acquired by Verizon Communications in 2015. Verizon eventually merged AOL with Yahoo to form a subsidiary known as Oath (later Verizon Media). In 2021, Verizon sold its media division to the private equity firm Apollo Global Management. Today, TechCrunch operates under the Yahoo Inc. umbrella, which remains a leading digital media conglomerate headquartered in the United States.
