CCleaner is a leading system optimization and cleaning utility originally developed by Piriform Ltd, a company founded in London, United Kingdom, in 2004. The software gained global popularity for its ability to remove unwanted files and invalid Windows Registry entries from computers, eventually expanding to Mac and Android platforms.
In 2017, Piriform was acquired by Avast, a major cybersecurity company headquartered in the Czech Republic. Following a significant industry merger in 2022, Avast became part of Gen Digital Inc. (formerly NortonLifeLock). This transition placed CCleaner under the umbrella of a multi-billion dollar American-based multinational corporation that specializes in consumer cyber safety. Today, the product is maintained by developers under Gen Digital, with headquarters residing in the United States and the Czech Republic.
