Brand History and Evolution

Western Star Trucks was founded in 1967 as Western Star White, a division of the White Motor Company. The brand was originally headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, but manufacturing was established in Kelowna, British Columbia, to cater to the demanding requirements of the Western Canadian logging, mining, and oil industries. Known for their durability and custom-built approach, these trucks earned a reputation for being 'raised in the pit mines and logging camps,' emphasizing toughness over assembly-line uniformity.

Ownership and Corporate Integration

Over the decades, the brand underwent significant ownership changes. In 1981, it was purchased by Terry Peabody and Bow Valley Resource Services before being acquired in 2000 by Freightliner LLC. Freightliner itself was a subsidiary of the global automotive titan Daimler AG. Following the corporate restructuring and demerger of Daimler’s commercial vehicle and passenger car segments, Western Star became a flagship brand under Daimler Truck North America.

Contemporary Manufacturing and Strategy

Today, Western Star is part of the Daimler Truck group, the world's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer. Most production for Western Star vehicles, including the advanced X-Series (47X, 49X, and 57X models), shifted from Canada to the United States. Operations are primarily centered at the Portland Truck Plant in Oregon and the Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant in North Carolina. This integration allows the brand to combine its historic vocational ruggedness with global technological advancements in safety and fuel efficiency.
