Founded in 1989 in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Arc'teryx began as 'Rock Solid', a manufacturer of climbing harnesses. The brand was renamed in 1991, inspired by the Archaeopteryx lithographica, the first reptile to develop feathers for flight. This heritage of technical evolution remains central to the brand's identity.

While Arc'teryx continues to operate its unique 'ARC'One' manufacturing facility in New Westminster, British Columbia—where its most technical flagship products are produced—the vast majority of its global production is distributed across high-end factories in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major international conglomerates. In 2005, it was acquired by the Finnish group Amer Sports. Since 2019, Amer Sports (and consequently Arc'teryx) has been owned by an international consortium led by Anta Sports. Despite this global ownership, the brand maintains its design headquarters and primary testing grounds in the Canadian Coast Mountains.
