JOZO is a historic salt brand with deep roots in the Netherlands. Its name is an abbreviation for 'Jodised Zout' (Iodized Salt), a name born in 1929 when the original manufacturer, Royal Dutch Salt Industries (KNZ), began adding iodine to salt to combat public health deficiencies. While the brand started with vacuum-refined table salt sourced from Dutch underground deposits, its 'Sel de Mer' (Sea Salt) range is typically harvested from salt pans in the Mediterranean (often France) or the Caribbean (Bonaire).

Over the decades, the brand's ownership transitioned from KNZ to AkzoNobel (specifically their Specialty Chemicals division, later known as Nouryon). In 2021, the salt business was acquired by the Salins Group (Compagnie des Salins du Midi et des Salines de l'Est), a leading European salt producer headquartered in France. Today, JOZO remains a household name across Northern and Western Europe, offering a variety of grinds and origins under the umbrella of its French parent company.
