The Asanas represent the physical postures and practice central to the discipline of Yoga, a spiritual and physical system with roots dating back thousands of years. Originating in India, the practice has evolved from ancient meditative 'seats' mentioned in Vedic texts like the Upanishads into the diverse physical exercise systems known globally today. While early texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century) codified a specific number of postures, the modern landscape of asanas was significantly expanded in the 20th century by influential teachers such as Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and B.K.S. Iyengar.
As a cultural and philosophical heritage, the 'brand' of Asanas is not owned by any single corporation but is a part of the traditional knowledge of India. However, various modern yoga schools, such as the Iyengar Yoga association or the Bihar School of Yoga, act as custodians of specific lineages and methodologies. Today, the practice of asanas is a global phenomenon, integrated into healthcare, fitness, and spiritual sectors across every continent.
