The Slinky is an iconic American toy consisting of a helical spring that can perform a variety of tricks, including traveling down a flight of stairs. It was invented by mechanical engineer Richard James in the early 1940s and demonstrated at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia in 1945. The toy became an instant success and has remained a staple of American childhood for generations.

The brand was originally managed by James Industries, the company founded by Richard and Betty James. In 1998, the brand was sold to Poof Products, which later became Poof-Slinky, Inc. In 2012, Alex Brands acquired the company. Following a series of acquisitions and restructuring in the toy industry, the Slinky brand is currently owned by Just Play, a major manufacturer of children's consumer products. While historically manufactured in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, production has expanded to meet global demand.
