Butternut Box was founded in 2016 in London by Kevin Glynn and David Nolan after they discovered the benefits of home-cooked food for one of their rescue dogs. The brand pioneered the 'fresh-cooked' dog food subscription model in the UK, utilizing human-grade ingredients that are gently cooked and then frozen to maintain nutritional integrity without the need for preservatives.
The company's primary manufacturing hub is located in Doncaster, England, where it operates a large-scale, purpose-built facility known as 'Rudie’s Kitchen.' Expansion into European markets has led to the acquisition of local players like PsiBufet in Poland and the establishment of distribution channels across Ireland and the EU. While Butternut Box remains an independent private company, it has received significant backing from major global investment firms including L Catterton and General Atlantic, which has fueled its rapid international growth.
