Mövenpick is a quintessential Swiss brand founded by Ueli Prager in 1948, starting with a restaurant in Zurich. Driven by the philosophy of doing 'ordinary things in an extraordinary way,' it expanded from dining into high-end food products and global hospitality. Today, the brand's identity is split across different sectors and owners, yet it maintains its association with premium quality and Swiss heritage.
The manufacturing of Mövenpick products occurs internationally. While the ice cream was originally Swiss-made, production now takes place in various factories globally under licensing agreements to ensure local fresh dairy sourcing. Similarly, their fine coffee is processed and distributed across Europe and Asia, adhering to strict Swiss quality standards regardless of the regional packing site.
The ownership structure is complex due to historical licensing deals. The consumer goods segment (ice cream and yogurt) is managed through a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners called Froneri, while the coffee business remains under the J.J. Darboven Group. The prestigious hotel division was acquired by the French hospitality giant Accor in 2018, which has since expanded the brand's footprint further into Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
