Berghaus is a renowned British outdoor clothing and equipment brand. It was established in 1966 in Newcastle upon Tyne by Peter Lockey and Geoff Lunn as an import and distribution business for outdoor gear. The name 'Berghaus' is a German translation of 'Mountain House,' reflecting the founders' ambitions to create high-quality technical gear for mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Over the decades, the brand became a pioneer in the industry, being the first to introduce the internal-frame rucksack and one of the earliest adopters of Gore-Tex technology in Europe. While its conceptual roots and design heritage remain firmly in the United Kingdom, manufacturing is carried out through a global network of specialized facilities, primarily across Asia reflecting modern garment and footwear production trends.
In 1993, the brand was acquired by the Pentland Group, a global brand management company based in London. Under Pentland's ownership, Berghaus has maintained its status as a staple for both professional explorers and casual hikers alike, benefiting from a robust international distribution network and a legacy of British innovation in the outdoor sector.
