Whiteaway Laidlaw was once one of the most prestigious retail landmarks in the Eastern world, famously nicknamed the 'Selfridges of the East' during the colonial era. Founded in 1882 in Calcutta by Robert Laidlaw and Edward Whiteaway, the brand grew from a small drapery and outfitting partnership into a massive department store empire. Its reputation was built on high-quality household goods, kitchenware, and luxury consumer items, serving the British colonial administration and wealthy local elites across India, Burma, Singapore, Malaysia, and beyond.

Throughout its height in the early to mid-20th century, the brand’s products were primarily manufactured in the United Kingdom to maintain British standards, though local production and sourcing in Asia were also utilized. The brand's presence declined post-World War II as colonial territories gained independence. In 1957, the chain was acquired by Great Universal Stores (GUS), a major British retail conglomerate. Although the physical department stores closed their doors by the 1960s, the brand remains a significant part of the history of global retail and international trade networks.
